Director Biography
I’ve been lucky enough to work in feature editorial, which has given me a ringside seat to a spectrum of projects like August Osage County, The Revenant, Star Wars The Last Jedi, and the Avatar sequels. I draw from those experiences, and life with my wife, our four kids, dog, fish, two hamsters, and Uromastyx, to tell stories about life and love, and the challenges and triumphs that we all experience on this spinning blue marble free falling through the universe.
Director Statement
We’re all trying to figure it out. It’s a comfort knowing that almost whatever I’m feeling, there is a strand of commonality tying me to someone, somewhere out there. We are sharing the same experience, even if the superficial flavors or colors vary. That’s why movies work. The medium of film is uniquely able to reach us in deeply personal ways in a pubic space, though those same ties that bind us. Channeling that magic as a filmmaker and storyteller is a rush that I feel blessed to be a part of.
GIVING THE POMEGRANATE SEEDS TO TANTALUS
Directed by: Denan Deng
Writer; Denan Deng Key Cast; Keming Chen Shooting Format:16 mm film Runtime; 26:06
Director Statement Our film is about the feeling of universal struggle to find a way out of life's challenges and to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. Through the story of the protagonist, a person who can't escape the stench in his room, we wanted to capture a snapshot of life and explore the pain and frustration of feeling like one's life is out of control.By focusing on the contrast between ideal and reality, we wanted to highlight the struggle to reach an ideal state and the feeling of being pounded by reality when that ideal is out of reach. We also wanted to explore the idea that many people try to avoid suffering by not thinking about the deeper problems in their lives, but that this avoidance can ultimately lead to even more pain and self-torture.In terms of visual style, we aimed for a sparse, everyday style, using simple and unadorned imagery to convey the emotions of our characters and the tone of the film.Ultimately, our film is about the pain of being pounded by reality and the struggle to find a way to live with and accept the present moment. We hope it will resonate with audiences and encourage them to think about their own experiences in a new way, and to consider the importance of finding meaning and purpose in life.#momoff2024 #denandeng
All The World's a Stage
Directed by:Kylene Harrington
Writer;Kylene HarringtonKey Cast; Alexander Remyl, Henny GuerraRena Wang Robert DeerDirector StatementGlove puppets have been an unquestioned part of Taiwanese culture, but largely unknown to the west. I’ve always found something a little creepy about the painted heads of these puppets, but have been fascinated by them all the same. I’m inspired by the vividness of glove puppetry and how it can both be low and high brow art. From there, I thought of a story: a romance not typically associated with the comedy/action/religious stories portrayed by glove puppets . This would be a story about the puppeteers themselves and it would be set in the past to show how long the art form has endured, much like love stories themselves.I made this film as both an ode to the art of glove puppetry and old Taiwan. Modern Taichung (my hometown in central Taiwan), like most cities, has become more urban, practically unrecognizable from the way it looked in the 20th century. Although old Taiwan had its fair share of flaws, it was still the childhood home of my mother and a place forever suspended in the past. I wanted to capture that snapshot of a moment in time and link it to something that still exists today (glove puppetry). However, even the glove puppets themselves no longer look the way they did in the 20th century, so my film would try to capture the essence of 60s’ Taiwan, right down to accurate looking puppets. I'm immensely appreciative of my cast and crew who brought their best to my debut short film. I'm incredibly proud of it.#KyleneHarrington #momofilmfestival
MUG
Directed by: Yegor Bugayenko
Writer: Stanislav Ilinsky Key Cast; Oleg Vasilkov Producer: Nikita Ryzhonkov Shooting Format: RED This is a "semi-finished film". The main character experiences a deep disappointment about what has happened, but the viewer doesn't know exactly what occurred. The viewer is invited to "cook" the film themselves by filling in the missing pieces with their own information about an event in their life that once led to similar experiences. Director Statement I am compelled to impart my vision to the world in a manner that is both respectful and unobtrusive, yet profoundly impactful. I firmly believe that cinema is the most potent medium to achieve this delicate balance. #yegorbugayenko #momofilmfestival
The Possible Life
Directed by: Burke Doeren
Writer; Jacob Seidman
Producer; Tyson Call
Key Cast; Michael Vlamis Lauren Call
Shooting Format: Arri Amira
Director Statement
Loss is something that we all inevitably deal with. Sometimes life gives us a heads up, and other times, fate is not that kind. The Possible Life is a case study in this concept - and we get the rare chance to experience grief and separation through the eyes of Emma, a new mom with a young baby. We find Emma and her husband Peter in the midst of young parenthood, struggling with all aspects of balancing their new life, and even small tasks now feel nearly impossible with the weight of their new responsibilities.
We made this film for one specific reason - to experiment. We wanted to push the boundaries of comfort for our actors, and focus more on personally relatable subtleties than complex locations and scenarios. This is meant to be a delicate story in a single location, and our only goal was to give our friends - both cast and crew - the chance to try something new, and to strive to give our audience a glimpse into the trials and challenges of new parenthood, and what it feels like for loss to show up at your door, unannounced and unwelcome.

SUPERCRITICAL
Directed by; John Osment
Writer; John Osment
Producer; Hayley Ulmer
Key Cast; Misha Brooks Amanda Bruton
Director Statement
I have a lot of love for snappy comedies and wanted to bring something traditionally experienced in our day jobs into an interesting setting. Simply put, I created a workplace comedy. Initially, I thought it would be retroactively funny to make it thrilling, scary, and tense—all for a payoff that's just someone asking for personal time off. It’s a not-so-subtle play on what it feels like to be bothered by nonsense while dealing with... everything. Fittingly, I wrote this in the summer of 2023 when the sky in New York City was essentially blood-red. I was still receiving emails.
For the cast, we have the hilarious Misha Brooks, who starred in the Paramount+ mockumentary series Players, by the creators of American Vandal. Amanda Bruton, a perfect choice for an angry boss with a tender heart, has been on national Broadway tours and has had many guest roles on television.
On the crew side, DP Alexandra Bock is an incredible talent with festival nominations under her belt, including Cinequest, Hollyshorts, and more. The crew also has experience with Marvel, Disney, and numerous commercial productions.
I'm immensely appreciative of my cast and crew who brought their best to my debut short film. I'm incredibly proud of it.

Runtime:8 minutes 44 seconds

Director Statement
I am working autobiographically with the feminist motto 'the personal is political' featuring an account of my own congenital heart defect (transplant featured in the film). I am trying to communicate that our personal struggles actually matter and count, it isn't just happening behind closed doors, but deserves to be shared. I am hoping this way to reach out and give strength to other people experiencing similar things.
